Tarp-style covers do more damage than good!
Tarp-style covers have to be put on and taken off every year, then stored somewhere when they’re not being used. Of course, once you take off the cover you expose the top of the condenser to the elements, which allows dirt, leaves and other debris to enter and collect inside. Tarps are ugly to look at and come in the brightest, most unsightly colors that are guaranteed to make every house look like it’s under construction. Tarp-style covers quickly become dirty and are a real mess to put away. All tarp-style covers inevitably develop rips, tears and holes that permit dirt and debris to enter your air conditioner and become trapped inside. Once this happens, your units base drains become clogged and water has nowhere to go.
The worst thing about tarp-style covers is that they trap condensation and moisture inside your air conditioner. Once moisture is trapped inside the tarp, your system begins to rust and prematurely age resulting in costly repairs or early replacement.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE:
When mounting Kool Kap to your condensing unit the outdoor temperature must be ABOVE 50°F . If the outdoor temperature is below 50ºF you must first warm the surface of the condensing unit where the three hinges will be placed. Use a standard hairdryer; making sure the surface of the condenser is warm/hot to the touch. The adhesive backing on the hinges is very strong, work carefully in positioning each hinge, as you will not get a second chance to reposition the hinge.
1. Clean and dry the top surface of condensing unit using a cleaner designed to cut grease and oil. Pay special attention to cleaning the area where the hinges will be attached. This will ensure permanent adhesion. 2. Position the Kool Kap squarely on condensing unit, making sure the top fan grill opening will be fully covered by the Kool Kap. 3. Position the three hinges so that they align with the three slots in the Kool Kap. Be sure that the location of the hinges allows for complete contact with the condensing unit. 4. Beginning with the middle hinge, remove the backing from the tape and carefully reposition the hinge for permanent mounting. Once positioned, press firmly on the hinge for best adhesion. 5. If your condensing unit is older or if the exterior paint shows signs of oxidation or corrosion the acrylic tape on the hinges may not have a good surface to adhere to. If this is the case you may want to use a single 1/2-inch sheet metal screw on each hinge to insure permanent adhesion. Be careful to insure that the screw does not interfere with the fan blade which is located on the underside of the condenser top. 6. Repeat this process for the left and right hinge making sure the Kool Kap does not move.
1. Feed the end of the strap under and around the inner rung of the fan grill. Loop the strap back through the inside of the buckle so the strap is attached to the grill. 2. Adjust the strap length by sliding the buckle up and down so the Kool Kap opens completely to an 85° angle. 3. Turn on the system and verify the operation of the Kool Kap.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kool Kaps
Why should I cover my air conditioner?
Your central air conditioning system was manufactured to give you 12 to 15 years of reliable comfort before you should need replace it due to age, inefficiency or wear. What air conditioning manufacturers forgot is that Mother Nature tortures your air conditioner day in and day out with rain, sleet, snow and ice. Plus, she likes to drop leaves, twigs, pine needles, acorns, “helicopters” and all other kinds of outdoor debris on your unit. Much of this debris gets trapped inside your air conditioner where it builds up and clogs the drain holes that otherwise allow water to escape. Once water is permitted to accumulate inside of your air conditioner, it is just a matter of time until rust and corrosion take over and destroy your condenser from the inside out. Keeping your system clean and free of debris not only helps it last longer, it makes your air conditioner operate more efficiently. Which lowers your utility bills – saving you money. By keeping your air conditioning unit clean and protected you’ll save money several ways: · You’ll extend the life of your unit. · You’ll increase the efficiency of your unit. · A clean air conditioner produces more cooling power than a dirty one. · You’ll reduce system breakdowns and costly repairs. Within a year of installing a new Kool Kap you will more than likely save enough money on your cooling bills to pay for your Kool Kap . After that, it’s like putting free money into your pocket every year.
Why do I want a Kool Kap and not a full fitted cover?
If you use a full fitted cover or a fitted top cover to protect your air conditioner, you’re only protecting your air conditioner half the time. That's because only Kool Kap is designed to work with your air conditioner’s fan motor to offer you year round protection from all types of debris. Kool Kap does not trap condensation inside your condensing unit like full fitted covers do. Because Kool Kap only covers the top portion of your air conditioner, air is able to pass through the sides of the unit allowing condensation to easily escape. Kool Kaps never need to be taken off, cleaned and stored. They are a permanent part of your air conditioner, requiring absolutely no maintenance.
How do I clean my Kool Kap?
If your Kool Kap gets dirty from bird droppings or other outdoor debris, simply hose it down using your garden hose. If you want the best looking Kool Kap on your block wipe it down with ArmorAllä and watch it shine. While you're there, it never hurts to rinse off your air conditioner’s exterior, so give it a good spray being carefull not to damage or bend the fins and then watch your system's efficiency go up!
Will the sun's rays damage my Kool Kap?
Absolutely not! Kool Kaps are made of a custom blended polymer that contains a special ultra-violet protecting agent that will not wash off or wear out. Kool Kaps that were originally installed in 1987 are still being used today on the same air conditioners without any signs of wear.
What about my condenser fan motor?
When a Kool Kap is installed on your air conditioner, it pops up when your air conditioner’s fan motor turns on. Kool Kaps are specifically designed to be very light and very durable, so blowing your Kool Kap up puts no added stress on your air conditioner’s fan motor. Once your Kool Kap is in the upright position (at an 85º angle), your fan motor’s top exhaust equals many times more force than is necessary to keep your Kool Kap upright without harm to your fan motor.
What if I have a two-stage condenser?
Most two-stage condenser fan motors provide more power than is actually necessary to lift up and keep your Kool Kap in the open position. Have you air conditioning professional test your Kool Kap prior to permenant installation just to be safe. Kool Kaps are specifically designed to be very light and have a large surface area. This allows for even the lightest duty fan motor to have more than sufficient lift to pop up and hold up your Kool Kap.
What if my Kool Kap bends when it is in the upright position?
It is not unusual for a Kool Kap to flex or bend when it is in the upright/open position, in fact is even common on very hot days. This happens because the air circulating through the condenser can be 20 to 30 degrees hotter than the outside air temperature 10 feet away from the condensing unit. Once the Kool Kap has cooled down it will return to it's original shape and lay flat across the top of the condenser. This may take a few hours depending on the outside temperature.
Can the strap slip into the grill and tangle with the fan?
We hear this question frequently as it does appear that this could happen. In reality we have never experienced or had a report that this has ever happened.
The reason it has never been an issue is due to several reasons. The manufacturers of air conditioning units try their best to keep the spacing of the grills as tight as possible to keep larger debris and small fingers out. This design process is perfect for Kool Kap straps because there just is not enough room for the strap to squeeze in.
The other main reason the strap does not fall into the grill is because the strap is so light. Even after your Kool Kap drops down the fan is still spinning fast enough and there is sufficient air to float the strap even after your Kool Kap has already fallen.
